Jose Antonio García "Doña Blanca - Skin Contact" Blanco '19
No one will ever accuse me of being trendy. After all, I’ve pretty much had the same clothes since I opened the store 15 years ago!
So when it comes to wine, I’m not jumping on the “skin contact” bandwagon when I decided to offer this wine from José António García. The fact is, skin contact wines are often times the perfect foil for a dinner party, when multiple flavors and types of foods are being served.
So if there was a time to drink a skin contact white wine, it is with Thanksgiving dinner! This one comes from Northwest Spain from José António and his wife Julia, producers in the Bierzo region.
This is the first release of their Doña Blanca, a rare varietal that they have had co-planted in a single vineyard in the village of Valtuille de Abajo. The vineyard was planted in 1920, so the vine age is incredible old, and the yields quite low. Doña Blanca is a think-skinned varietal, so the García’s, macerated the skins (and 20% of the stems) with the whole clusters for 90 days. The wine was then slowly pressed and racked into 500L French barrels for one year of aging. The wine sits on its lees without any stirring during that year period.
Citrus and stone fruit on the nose, with beautiful spice notes. Medium-weight, with mandarin orange, almond, and soft tannins. Don’t serve this at refrigerator temperature, think more cellar temperature. An incredibly rare wine, we were able to grab just a few of the 300 bottles produced!
